Microsoft Internet Explorer vulnerability - February 2011
Microsoft have announced a serious security hole that has been found in Internet Explorer. It is expected that hackers will rapidly take advantage of the hole and through this vulnerability it they can potentially access any information located on the PC or network.
The threat affects Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003, Server 2008 and is described here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/2501696.mspx .
There is no fix yet available from Microsoft only a tool to lock down MHTML.
As part of our proactive LANcare service, LANtech has already applied a patch to all LANcare customer's workstations and server to protect them against this threat. This will not fix the issue, there is no fix yet available, but disables the vulnerable feature within Internet Explorer.
The disabling code may impact how some websites are displayed or operate. Once a fix is available from Microsoft we can then apply the fix and re-enable the feature with I.E.
If you are not on a LANcare agreement then the code will need to be manually installed onto your workstations and servers.
If you would like a LANtech engineers to come on-site and applies the temporary fix then please contact our helpdesk on 04-494-9679 or 0800-4LANTECH or send an email through to our helpdesk support@lantech.co.nz.
If you would prefer to apply the fix yourself then the instructions to do are as follows;
Microsoft have provided a tool that will lock down Internet Explorer so that it is not vulnerable to this threat. The lock down tool available here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501696 .
There are two tools, one to enforce the lockdown (the enable tool) and another that is used to remove the lockdown (the disable tool) once a fix becomes available. Click on the Enable tool to download it and once the dialog box pops up, select Run. Agree to the license pop-up then it will begin the install of the fix.
If you would like assistance or have any concerns, please contact our help desk on 04-494-9679.
