Emergency Planning for Businesses

A disaster could happen at any time. Your home or business could be seriously damaged and you could be on your own for up to three days, maybe more.

You  can't prevent disasters, but YOU can take some simple steps to ensure you can cope in emergencies. By identifying and managing the hazards in our communities and anticipating and preparing for events before they happen, Civil Defence can reduce the effects on our communities and our daily lives.

Emergency Management is recognised as an important issue for responsible employers. It encompasses safety requirements such as:

  • building safety standards
  • fire evacuation procedures
  • occupational safety and health
  • personal safety and security

As a guideline all staff should:

  • Know where the assembly area is for their building,
  • Know the building evacuation routes,
  • Attend a first aid course,
  • Know where vital equipment is stored, and know how to use it (eg fire extinguishers, first aid kit etc).
